(Finnish version of high;) Finnish Car Magazine (tekniikan Maailma=3D~Technik World) tested winter tyres in their 2.10.1996 magazine. They did the test with cooperation of two=20 other magazines - Swedish Car Magazine "Auto, Motor & Sport" and Norweigien "Motor-magazine". Winter tyres are also often tested in Northern Finland by the tyre manufacturers them self! In the test was winter tyres with spikes and tyres without (like new model of Bridgestone Plizzak - last years winner of tyres without spikes)... My own opinion on winter tyres is that I wan't a quit tyre! Nokia has very good if not the best winter tyres but they are or were like driving on gears - they rattled and made this scraping noise exspecially Nokia NR 09. NR 10 is a lot quiteter and NR 1 (the new one) is even more quieter! Gislaved is very famous and popular in Taxi-drivers cars, so it must be good! I also had once Gislaved and it was quiet but I also lost all the spikes rapidly (even if driving carefully)!? I also has experience on Goodyear on my Ford Escort 1.6 diesel. They were not bad either and quite silent. So all three first tyres are a good choice! I think I go for the new Nokia Hakkapeliitta 1, becouse Gislaved loses it's spikes!!! I don't have any experience on winter tyres without spikes, but had heard that they are good in city driving etc. if there is no ice on the road - they really loose their grip on ice!!! Tyres in the test with spikes: Dunlop SP Artic M3 (Japan but made in Finland) Gislaved Nord Frost II (Swedish) Goodyear Ultra Grip 400 (Great-Britain) Michelin XM+S 260 (Great-Britain) Nokia Hakkapeliitta 1 (Finnish) (by the way "Hakkapelitta" was a famous and brave finnish soldier riding with a horse in the Russian 30-year war back in 1800's ;) Tyres in the test without tyres (made in?): Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 (Japan) Goodyear Ultra Grip 5 (German) Michelin XM+S100 Maxi-Glase 2 (Japan) Nokia Hakkapeliitta NRW T (Finnish) The tyre they used in the test was 186/65 R14 (I had last winter 175/65-14 Nokia Hakkapeliitta 10 tyres in my FWD Corolla FX-Gti-16 (AE-92) and maybe try out=20 185/65-14 this year) I don't go deep to the details in the test, but will inform you about the basics... Here are the results with spikes - grades and some comments: 1. Gislaved Frost - 9.0 (last year '95 winner too) GOOD: - Traction on winter conditions - Driveability BAD: - Tyre and spike noise - Spikes wont stay on the tyre (some spikes lost during test - no such problem with other tyres!!!! 2. Goodyear Ultra Grip 5 - 8.1 GOOD: - Take off on snow and ice - Driveability on snow and ice BAD: - Sideways traction on ice - Lock braking on snow 4. Michelin XM+S 260 GOOD: - Take off on ice BAD: - Sideways traction - Very loud noise! and here are the results without spikes: 1. Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 GOOD: - Sideways traction - Very quiet on asfalt BAD: - Driveability and traction on "wet snow =3Dsnow that is almost water" - Driveability on ice 2. Nokia Hakkapeliitta NRW T GOOD: - stable steering on ice road - Quiet BAD: - Driveability and traction on "wet snow =3Dsnow that is almost water" - Axial traction on ice 3. I have norrowed it down to Nokian, Bridgestone, Yokahamas. Is there any of you out there that have done any side by side testing? I have been quoted prices from $380 for the Yoks to 520 for the Nokian. Are the Nokians that much better? These prices include steel rims, balancing, and shipping. Any help would be great!! Thanks, Bill B.T.W. I live in S.W.
